I think it's a good thing for GNU/Linux, in general. Seems like now Windows will be displaced in great numbers from Chinese institutional computers, and that can only be a good thing.

There are of course concerns that such a collaboration will facilitate censorship and spyware, but it's a mixed situation. It's much preferable that a Linux distro makes progress in China than a completely closed source OS. With open source there is at least the possibility to remove any antifeatures, and more Linux adoption may have beneficial knock-on effects outside of China (for example US companies dealing with Chinese suppliers might be encouraged to use compatible software).

The US doesn't have a Great Firewall (yet), but the level of spying on citizens and the equipment used in China and the US is probably very similar.

On another note, I would like to tell you what happened when I with the full audience of the conference asked Chris DiBona from Google if he could comment on support for OpenDocument Format in office suites from Google, namely QuickOffice Pro HD and Google Docs. He was honest, and said there is not any support for ODF. He said that Google has not indexed many ODF documents on the web, thus supporting it is not high on Google's priority. He added that if it was important, that he would recommend using LibreOffice and that Google supported the work of the Document Foundation. I talked to him afterwards, explaining that many European countries have mandated use of ODF if publishing editable documents, and he said he would talk to the office suite guys about this. Norway is not part of the EU, but I have written a complaint to Neelie Kroes office, because as the world moves to tablets we must bring open standards with us and demand support from vendors.

I'm not sure how helpful an endorsement from RMS would be however. Outside of the "FLOSS" (ugh) world nobody knows who he is.

I was always looking for a tool that could be used to create one's one "encyclopedia" about some subject and creates links between subjects automagically.

Like: You once wrote an article into the encyclopedia about Harry Mulisch, but you totally forgot that you ever did that. Years later you create an entry about one of his books, and as you type "Harry Mulisch" into the article, the software sees that there is already an article about that and automatically creates a link to it.

That would probably go along nicely with this software.

Eu uso Piwigo para hospedar minhas fotos. Tem app para enviar as fotos diretos do dispositivo para o mesmo (Android ou IOs) mas o app não tem nenhum filtro. Mas tem a vantagem de não colocar as fotos quadradas

I'm with Michelle - but we still have to put something gnome based on lab computers. Ubuntu 12.04 is likely the end of the line for us for Ubuntu due to the Amazon search kerfuffle. Can't go back to Debian because it doesn't install/run on any machine manufactured in the last year.

Some of the Ubuntu spin-offs seem to solve most of the issues people have with Ubuntu. I really liked the last ElementaryOS, and the upcoming Luna release looks promising.
Many people swear by Mint, but I have never tried it, since I am not a big fan of green.
I do admit to being an Ubuntu fan, although the Amazon thing is slightly disturbing.

For me the Ubuntu Amazon thing was also a line in the sand, not because it was hard to remove but because it indicates the direction of the distro. I'm currently using SolusOS 1.2 on my main desktop machine, which is based on Debian squeeze and Gnome 2.

I'd rather have old hardware with Debian than new hardware without. You don't always get that choice though.

Arch and Mint are the new flavour of the month distros, but I'm tired of flavour of the month distros. They all go wrong as soon as the cool kids find a new toy.

If I had to choose an alternative to Debian, it'd be RedHat (yeah, yeah Fedora, Cif, Snickers, whatever).

I'd rather have old hardware with Debian than new hardware without.

Our department runs on three year hardware update cycles. Brand new machines every three years. There's no way to do this with Debian because we'd need to keep machines locked up in a closet for a year until Debian supports them. By then you've only got two years left before replacement - at best. No way the bean counters are going to let this happen.
